Run for the Rose

2,000 enthusiastic runners and walkers, adults and children, electrified the Medical Center on Sunday, May 18, 2003, for the first annual "Run for the Rose" and managed to net an incredible $90,000. It was so heartwarming to witness doctors, nurses, therapists, support staff, and patients from many area hospitals joining together with each other and with the caring, wonderful people of the Houston community in the spirit of helping others while honoring the memory of our darling Marnie.

Marnie was a second-year pediatric resident at The University of Texas - Houston Medical School when she died on August 23, 2002. Brain cancer robbed Marnie of her career, her mobility, and then her life. It could not, however, crush her spirit, her humor, or her will to survive. She starred in the critically acclaimed ABC television series, Houston Medical, to increase awareness of brain cancer and to give encouragement and strength to those who were ill. She and her talented, wonderful doctors at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center never gave up hope that her treatments would work. She would not want us to give up hope for a cure.

The second annual "Run for the Rose" will take place on Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Sam Houston Park.
